Pick Ferret Tamer if you are following the route to Ringmaster. Trickster is Jester’s other first choice, with an Illusionist follow-up reported by Dastu.

Read the class, then compare the traits

Check the class name. Multiple cards named Ringmaster are variations of that class.
Compare the traits and skill text. Choose the offered variation that fits the army you are building.
Read your unit’s progress bar. Use its own target to judge the next promotion.

The same run shows Jester at 11/8 and Ferret Tamer reaching 18/18. The denominators belong to those units, so 8 and 18 are examples rather than universal promotion levels.

Need levels, or the offered Imprint?

For a level checkpoint, compare the displayed Absorb gain with the levels you still need. If you want the offered Imprint instead, read its effect before converting it into levels.
